Today the tiny, quiet community of Lincoln, New Mexico belies its turbulent and dark history during the heyday of the Wild West. For a time in the 1870s and 1880s this one-mile stretch of dirt road on the banks of the Rio Bonito or "pretty little river," was known as "the most dangerous street in America." Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett, the Horrell brothers, and many other outlaws and lawmen firmly cemented Lincoln's place in the annals of Western history with violence and high adventure unmatched in world history.

Today, Lincoln survives as the best-preserved frontier town left in existence. A visit to Lincoln is an authentic stroll through a town trapped in time, a ghostly yet tangible place where adobe walls bridge the gap between our time in the 21st century, and the most famous (and infamous) of America's western icons.  This map shows all of murders, suicides, and other untimely deaths known to have occurred during this tumultuous time, and details of their locations.
