This map shows the present-day states of Arizona and New Mexico and West Texas with locations of the major Indian and US Army conflicts that took place in the second half of the 19th Century. Because the map covers such a broad geographic extent and six decades of rapid change, it does not represent a single snapshot in time. Rather, it paints a geographic picture of the complex story that was the struggle between the new American nation and the indigenous people who had long called the region home. Present-day Indian reservations, historic roads and trails, and the locations of armed conflicts and massacres that spanned sixty years illustrate the spatial relationship of the events collectively known as the Indian Wars of the American Southwest.
